Florida couple John Pirman and Steve Tetreault built a new house inspired by the Sarasota School. Today’s FEMA codes required a plinth to lift the house five-and-a-half feet above grade and a roof that can withstand hurricane wind loads, making it a challenge to re-create the lightness of midcentury design, Pirman says.

Modscape is an end-to-end company, however they will bring in outsdie consultants when necessary. The landscape and pool for this project were executed with the help of Bethany Williamson, Wickstead Works, and Gordon Ave Pools & Spas.

The original pool was refinished and grommets were installed for a custom safety cover. A new firepit by Lumacast and teak-and-rope lounge chairs from the Conran Shop create the perfect outdoor lounge area.

Homeowner Sean Brunson led the design of the new modernist home, enlisting the help of architect Alex Stone to complete the drawings. For the design, the Brunsons were inspired by the modest post-and-beam homes of the 1950s and 60s, particularly the Sealy House by Edward Killingsworth.

Sean and Geri Brunson designed and built the airy, glassy, midcentury-inspired home of their dreams on Florida's east coast.

Positioned around a fire pit, the outdoor living room provides the Thompson family with a space to relax and connect on the pool patio.
