The couple took advantage of numerous municipal programs when landscaping the backyard. Mandy recently completed a free course through LADWP, who also promotes resources for the SoCal Turf Replacement Program, to become a certified California Native Plant Landscape: “There is an amazing amount of knowledge and resources for transitioning yards with more native/drought-tolerant plants through LADWP and the Theodore Payne Foundation,” says Mandy.

"These materials, complemented by the open shelves with stacked ceramics, are key to the experience," she says. Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerators and freezer opened the kitchen up to allow for more counter space.

A large, sliding-glass door replaced the French doors, allowing the living space to connect to the outdoor dining area and for the living area be expanded outside in warmer months. An aged timber awning was also removed, creating a sleeker, more contemporary facade.

The dark tile used in the guest bathroom was chosen to both complement and create a quiet backdrop for the more expressive character of the marble. Elsewhere, light finishes help to reflect light around the space, making it feel brighter and more open.

The site is located in Fairfax, California, at the end of a dead-end street. Set in a forest with views to the north, its natural surroundings provide a peaceful retreat from daily life. The steep hillside and narrow driveway made access for construction challenging, and the number of vehicles on site had to be restricted.
