The kitchen was the only room which received a slightly altered layout. In addition wood boards from demolished cabinets were reused to create new cabinet fronts hung on brass piano hinges. The result is a mix of period-appropriate additions and new configurations with recycled parts.

The house has the feel of a refined barn: The kitchen flows into the dining area, then into a den. The two PISE “chimneys” serve to demarcate the transitions and visually unite the space.

Black was a natural choice when it came to updating an already existing wet bar. The brass shelf was laser-cut from thick brass sheet--designed with a simple geometry as a nod to a classic bar.

“This is not a custom home—it’s the case of a builder who put something up in D.C. catering to a more traditional market,” explains Balodemas. “He framed the ceilings down to make them symmetrical. It would’ve been weird at that time to have the rooms oddly shaped. People were way too timid back then.” The rear terrace features new pavers from Pennsylvania Blue Slate and Crate and Barrel seating.
