1. Longchamp Outdoor Living

Architect: Clark Richardson Architects, Location: Austin, Texas

From the architect: "Our Longchamp project developed from the desire for a usable outdoor living space as a complementary extension to the existing home while maximizing the experiences possible at the site. The clients sold a second home property because they were not utilizing it enough throughout the year. Their hope was to bring the water home by building an outdoor living area and pool directly adjacent to the house. The existing land on the property was sloped and because it was fairly low did not have access to the amazing views beyond. Providing a minimal limestone plinth helps to transition from the high deck at the house to the lower areas adjacent to the pool and pavilion."

2. Living Screen House

Architect: CplusC Architectural Workshop, Location: Sydney, Australia

From the architect: "The client’s brief was for a home which could be both a springboard for entertaining and a private family retreat. The site constraints and [our] practice’s commitment to passive solar design and natural daylighting drove much of the resulting form.Conceptually, the spatial planning of the house is split into social and family spaces. Downstairs, the kitchen, living, dining and outdoor spaces are located to optimize solar access while enjoying strong visual connections between spaces. The acrylic wall between above ground lap pool and lounge room refracts sparkling natural light into the double height social spaces, wrapping indoor and outdoor spaces together."

3. Sunset Hills Residence

Architect: Hsu McCullough, Location: Thousand Oaks, California

From the architect: "Scandinavian inspired minimalism in northern hillside Thousand Oaks, California. This ranch house retreat was carefully planned around the location of an existing oak tree while the interior spaces frame the yard landscape and swimming pool."

4. Casa A

Architect: REM'A Arquitectos, Location: Guimarães, Portugal

From the architect: "This house is located in a very typical urban plot of Guimarães outskirts, [an area] with very dense construction. We choose to clad the main volume with wood, assembled in a diagonal system, like a nest [that contains] the private areas of the house. The natural aging process of the wood, over time, will get closer to the concrete color, both influencing each other."

5. Bentleyville Residence

Architect: Dimit Architects, Location: Bentleyville, Ohio

From the architect: "The family loves to entertain and requested that the home have an easy flow between spaces. The exterior of each structure features a natural exterior palette of stained cedar, stucco, and stone with a standing seam metal roof."
