“The backyard, which was kind of the focus of the project, was overgrown and quite disconnected from the house itself,” said architect Nigel Parish. The glass doors of the addition open onto a patio and lawn where the kids can play.

“The pitched ceilings and ribbon of clerestory windows make the interior feel more spacious than it is,” notes Gooden.

Constructed predominantly with locally quarried stone, steel, poured concrete floors and a turf roof, the horizontal outline of the property harmonizes beautifully with its rugged natural surroundings. Stone stairs on the perimeter of a main courtyard ascend to a rooftop garden. Large windows on the other side of the living area overlook an enclosed water feature with a statue of a monk.

Starting with the average lot size of a single-family home in Seattle, Wittman created three residences by building up. From the rooftop deck, that tactic has a clear advantage.

“Watching the sunrise and moonrise from the living room is gobsmacking,” says James.

The owners built the house as a place to gather with their three adult children on Loon Lake, where they had vacationed at the husband’s family home for years. The modern Adirondack chairs are by Loll Designs.

The clients insisted that none of the trees on the property be disturbed, so Kevin Alter and his team at Alterstudio Architecture built a deck and an overhang around two of them.

The design team used FSC-certified lumber and cedar siding throughout the home. They created an ideal family home that’s perfect for indoor/outdoor living, thanks to broad eaves for shade, natural cross-ventilation, and plenty of windows to let in natural light.
