The main living area is on the second floor in an open double-height space where the ceiling peaks at 15 feet under an angled roof. It contains an airy kitchen/dining area and a living room. A hallway leads to the primary bedroom, and a loft contains a bedroom for their kids. The ground floor has an apartment they rent to local teachers.

The southern edge of the hill on which Ogyen Choling sits offers sweeping views of the Tang Valley and is bedecked with two types of prayer flags, lungdhar and manidhar. The former is composed of colorful squares commonly hung on a diagonal line from high to low between two objects, such as trees or stupas (Buddhist shrines). It’s believed the traditional mantras on prayer flags are passed on when the wind ruffles the fabric, which is why lungdhar flags are found blowing in the wind at passes, temples, and bridges in Himalayan nations. The vertical manidhar—most often white but sometimes red, as here—are raised to honor the deceased. A wooden dagger is affixed to their top to help those they commemorate “cut the knot of ignorance.”

A canvas by John Finneran hangs beneath the HVAC vents. Of the lacquered plywood used throughout, Lizz says, "To us, it doesn’t feel like pattern. White walls would be serious and cold, and our family’s not serious or cold. But when our appraiser saw it, he said, 'When are you going to finish it?'

Greg Knapp and Robyn Traynor worked with architect Peter Braithwaite to design a nature retreat for their family on a slice of Canadian wilderness. It has two shed-roofed structures joined by a boardwalk elevated above a preexisting walking path on the couple’s land.

Adair has long wished for Togo chairs, but as much as she loves the design, she tries not to be too precious about it. “We let the kids use them how they want, and they’re perfect fort furniture,” she says. “They’re really durable. It’s a design that makes architect parents happy.”

Keeping ample green space on the property was a top-tier goal. One of the house's original screened-in porches remains, but, according to Emily, "we dropped the screens so when you're sitting in the dining room, you can look out and see the bamboo." The divide between the new and old sections is marked by a gap in the roof that lets the sun into a small planted area.
