In the bedroom, mailing tubes tucked between a concrete weight-bearing post and the eastern wall serve as substitutes for a chest of drawers.

In the bathroom, the Stylo bar by Alu eliminates the need for space-eating cabinets by creating a vertical tower of platforms on which all the hygienic essentials rest. Generally used in retail displays, the Stylo stretches from floor to ceiling; platforms branch off at various intervals, creating resting spots for toilet paper, shaving gear, toothpaste, soap, and other necessities. The tub is built up from a rubberized plaster by Miracote and finished off with a woven fabric mesh and final layer of All-in-One coating, popular in prisons for its low price and durability.

Just because your kitchen is on the smaller side doesn’t mean you can’t make it as efficient and effective as possible.

Open enclosures and connections to adjacent living spaces keep the home inviting and airy rather than densely packed—a key feature for an owner of two dogs: Ben, a whippet, and Flynn, an Irish gypsy dog.

Architect and resident Andrew Simpson maximized the diminutive home with double-height ceilings, elevated compact shelving, and lofted sleeping quarters.

In such a small space “you have to organize, and every piece takes a decision,” says resident Heidi Wright. The couple keep things they use less frequently, like guest bedding, in the higher cabinets.

A preoccupation for Levine was saving space and money; he and his team used threaded steel rods and birch veneer plywood to construct the shelving in his office at the rear of the house.

Sparano works in the dining area, where books about travel, architecture, and food, as well as framed architectural drawings from his grad school days, line the back wall. The hollow glass-walled light fixture is from Ikea; every few months, the family fills it with a different season-inspired item, such as pinecones in the fall and feathers in the winter, as pictured here.

A blue book case adds a bit of color to the bright interior. Buyers of the Tilley row houses were able to customize the interior finishes including native Texas pecan flooring.
