Popp removed the old bath/shower combo and remodeled the configuration of the shower, which now has one-level access for safety and ease of use, and installed a remote operating device. “The tile is all Heath seconds,” says Popp, who found enough pieces to cover the entire 250-square-foot bathroom.

Linden used standard 2x2 daltile in the bathroom, but swapped out individual tiles to create a custom pattern. The toilet is by Duravit, the sink and cabinet are by Ikea, and the faucet is Kohler.

Christian and Faye considered lots of different timbers for the interior finish, but finally chose Douglas Fir. ‘Oak would have been too yellow, and we loved the pinkish tones of Douglas Fir which we felt would complement the red and yellow brick of the existing Edwardian house.

The c-shaped kitchen is built from Ikea carcasses which were strengthen by the couple’s joiner to withstand the weight of the polished concrete worktops and clad in Douglas Fir plywood.

The kitchen is lower than the rest of the open-plan living area, helping to create distinct zones between the cosy living space and the practical cooking area. A three-metre long rooflight above floods the kitchen with natural light.

The bathroom has been decorated in neutral colours to help create a clutter-free sanctuary. Hidden storage is built into the ceiling above.

The large, naturally lit kitchen is the heart of the house. Messmate-clad cupboards and huge expanses of glass dominate the space where Angelucci uses the sink, Gorman works at the kitchen island, and Pepa and Hazel look on. Play in the courtyard between the kitchen and garage is easily supervised and enclosed from the alley behind the house.

The heated Moroccan tile floors were one of the many features added in the renovation.

The team collaborated with Nashville's Metro Historical Commission to ensure the renovations respected the building's historic status.

The kitchen cabinetry is fashioned from oak and the island is quartz.
