New Nordic Designs to Love from Stockholm Design Week 2016

The month of February means all eyes on are design in the Nordic countries, as the region’s furniture designers and manufacturers launch fresh products en masse during Stockholm Design Week. Take note of these highlights.

Swedish designer Carina Seth Andersson focuses on smaller items in her work, mainly in glass or ceramics. For furniture manufacturer Fogia, she created a capsule collection simply called Ceramics. The shape of each piece is weighty and monumental, leaving out unnecessary details.

British designer Jasper Morrison has a longtime love for Scandinavian design, and not least Danish. Now he has teamed up with Fredericia, the company associated with midcentury icons such as Børge Mogensen, Nanna Ditzel, and Hans Wegner. Morrison has created a series of two tables in addition to the sleek Kile sofa.

Issey Miyake’s studio has created a small collection of tableware and interior textiles for Finnish brand Iittala. The concept of harmony translates into a subdued color scheme and soft shapes as well as the Japanese designer’s signature pleats.

The brand’s popular National Geographic cabinet—designed by Mats Theselius to store his beloved magazines—has been in production since 1991, and the 25th anniversary is celebrated with a limited edition clad in linen printed with foliage. Theselius has also added a base in patinated brass with two drawers for maps.

The rugs are hand-tufted and made with wool, linen, and shimmering lurex details.

An unassuming little helper is how young Danish designer Mads Sætter-Lassen modestly describes his desk lamp, Buddy, designed for Northern Lighting. The multifunctional design includes a holder to keep pens, keys, and other small objects that are easily lost. The flexible shade, available in five matte colors, can be rotated in any direction.

This year’s new additions include a notebook by Nendo founder Oki Sato, an espresso cup by Luca Nichetto, and a small bowl by Jin Kuramoto, made from polyester mesh originally used as oil filters in cars.

Berlin-based designer Dirk Winkel’s new lamp designed for Wästberg, w164 Alto, has a distinct architectural quality. The top disk of the base is the combined light switch and dimming wheel, and the pole houses a multidirectional LED light that distributes light evenly.
