The master bed floats in the middle of the room, so the waking view is of the gardens and fountain.

Constructed in 1909, the building was named for its original occupants, The Free Methodist Publishing House, before it became the Museum of Holography, and was bought by the new owners in 2012. They tapped Nushu Architecture and contractor Vero Design + Build for a renovation of the structure to include 11 bedrooms, a capacious communal area, a kitchen, and a fully-equipped lounge.

“There’s a soulfulness in this small house that’s impossible to replicate in something completely new. The sweetness truly lingers," says architect Michael Lee.

Set atop a BoConcept bed, a graphic blanket by Pia Wallén for HAY punctuates the master bedroom. The sconces are by Robert Dudley Best for Bestlite.

The master bedroom in Holden Shannon’s unit in Houston’s Row on 25th development features a Nook bed from Blu Dot, a pair of Base table lights by Tom Dixon, and a painting by artist Elva Stewart.

“Everything in the bedroom is built in, including the bed,” adds Keith, who commissioned Hub Woodworks to mill this key feature. Andrew Neyer Crane lights flank the bed, an Akari pendant by Isamu Noguchi hangs overhead, and a Womb chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, covered in Cassia fabric from Designers Guild, sits in the corner.

A downstairs guest bedroom is a welcome retreat for visitors. “Because I do so much traveling, if someone comes to stay, I want them to feel they can just be,” says Lena. The Roar + Rabbit brass-inlaid nightstand is from West Elm.

The sleeping area features skylights that allow for stargazing at night.
