In 1939, Walter Gropius drafted a radical architectural vision for the campus alongside Marcel Breuer, though it was never built because of cost. By 1941, Black Mountain had raised enough money to build a full campus, employing modernist architect A. Lawrence Kocher as the chief designer. Resting on the shore of Lake Eden, the two-story, 202-foot-long Studies Building formed the campus' epicenter.

A small storage area forming the house's base was clad in creek stones found onsite, and room was left for the creek's occasional return during high rains.

The balance of old and new achieved in the project impressed the jury for the Australian Institute of Architects 2020 awards, which commended Bokey-Grant by saying, "JJ House is exemplary as an approach for altering and establishing a sense of individuality in the recognizable housing stock of our suburbs."
