Makai’s structural steel components were designed by Mark Donofrio and affixed to the lava at four points. The kitchen contains a Kohler sink and pot racks from IKEA. "Because of the angle of the lava, it’s asymmetrical," says architect Erin Moore.

Moore worked with contractor David Sharp to ensure that the pavilions, each measuring under 120 square feet, would sit lightly on the sloping site. “A big structure would have been about the house, and not the place,” she says. “Having multiple units was important.” Maui, Hawaii Dwell Magazine : September / October 2017

A view of the lower living space on the ground floor. Green materials used include the FSC-certified cedar on the ceiling, Permlight LED downlights, and a floor of polished concrete with fly ash mix with radiant heating underneath. The couch was designed by Glenn’s interior designer, Heidi Toll Design.

Glenn looks toward the front entrance from the northeast wall of his house. The wall is exposed concrete block with translucent Polygal windows.

All the cabinetry in the kitchen/dining area, including the door into the parlor bathroom, is of FSC-certified maple. Hand-blown lights of recycled glass hang over the dining table.
