An arched opening was added to connect the kitchen and breakfast nook, and gain sightlines to the yard. Seamus refinished the fireplace mantle and added square zellige Zia tile in ‘Nana’s Lipstick’ to the surround. Gubi Semi Pendants hang over the island, and the sink has a Devol Ionian Bridge Tap.

A tub zone lined in redwood connects to the master bedroom, which is furnished with a vintage Sergio Rodrigues lounge chair and Voyage Immobile seats from Roche Bobois.

The open kitchen is a frequent gathering and social space, whether for the family of four or when entertaining.

The ground floor material palette features polished concrete floors and lime washed walls.

Tom purchased a beat up (but still functioning) wooden scissor sculpture at an online circus auction. Covered in peeling baby blue paint, some expressed doubts, but he had a vision. Inspired by the work of Claes Oldenburg, Tom approached local artist Teddy Noggle who sanded it down, built the pedestal box it’s placed on, and painted the sculpture bright yellow.

By far the biggest transformation, the new kitchen enjoys high ceilings from the revamped roofline; all new casework, flooring, and finishes; and a large island. The stools are from 2xhome.

Despite a delay in schedule, the house will be capable of operating off-grid thanks to a solar photovoltaic system and battery back up system.

The couple worked with Seattle-based firm SHED Architecture + Design on a remodel. At the front door the glass clerestory and sidelite were kept, but the solid door swapped out for a transparent one.

“We’re always throwing events,” says Paul, so the indoor/outdoor style was a great fit for them.
