The coffee table is a keepsake from Beaulieu’s grandparents, made of monkeypod wood and bought in Hawaii in the 1960s. The couple flanked it with a Design Within Reach Raleigh Sofa and Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair. A Nelson Pear Lotus Floor Lamp and Rattan Ottoman from Franco Alibini finishes the room.

A bench in the entry echoes the design language of the Donald Judd-inspired island, with a cushion sewn by Caroline from recycled fabric sourced at a salvage store.

The walls are painted “Pure White” by Sherwin Williams.

Techo-Bloc’s Ocean Grande in Beige Cream and the smaller, rough-hewn Valet pavers in Onyx Black have been used to create a visually exciting layout with charcoal grout to emphasize the basket-weave pattern. “Stunning textures are revealed under different angles of the sun,” says Ciccarello.

The living room has a gray rug by Tai Ping Carpets, rust-colored B&B Italia sofas, a pendant by David Weeks, and a frieze of butterflies by artist Kirk Maxon inspired by birds that flutter in the treetops outside Roberta’s balcony. Blinds, pocketed in the soffit above the doors, come down automatically when the sun is too bright.

The custom slatted wood railings is fitted with discreet flip-down hooks to hang coats. Stairs lead down to a guest space and an additional unit for a future caretaker. An elevator, not visible, also connects the two levels. The Overlap pendant is by Michael Anastassiades for Flos.

The house was built near a sometimes-noisy highway, but robust insulation and windows help minimize sound filtration, as does a foyer and hallway fronting the building.

The home’s exaggerated roof pitch allowed for a spacious attic bedroom and study that spans half the house. “It gives the owners a whole other element without having to go up a level,” says Nowlan.
