Grutas Tolantongo is a complex of natural hot springs, thermal pools, tunnels, and caves built into a box canyon in the mountains of central Mexico. The eco-resort runs under the cooperative <i>ejido</i> system, meaning it’s owned and operated by members of the local community.

Originally the plans called for a fully circular staircase, but the tight spiral was uncomfortable to navigate. Instead, Patnaik split the difference, installing folded wood steps as the first half of the staircase, leading to a platform that then transitions to the spiral.
