Inside, House Zero looks and feels like a traditional home, but with undulating 3D-printed exterior walls that offer an element of texture and movement to interior spaces.

Icon unveiled their latest 3D-printed home, House Zero, at SXSW earlier this year. Designed by Lake|Flato Architects, House Zero explores new design opportunities for 3D printing in residential construction.

For Bruce Shafer and Carol Horst's vacation home in the Tehachapi Mountains, architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig chose materials suited to the harsh climate. "The area is super cold in winter and super hot in summer," says Kundig, who designed a deep overhang to shade the core of the house from solar gain. "In the high desert, it's not just about being in the sun, it's about getting out of the sun."

The entryway had to be reconfigured to accommodate the new lower level and its deck, while the existing upper deck was given shade from the sun.

Solving the problem of outdoor storage, the coffee table is the perfect place to stash extra cushions. Its slatted teak surface strategically allows water to pass through, preventing pooling.

The side table can stand alone or slide over any seat cushion to create an elevated tray surface. “We wanted to blend beautiful design with cool, yet practical, features that solve pain points for the outdoor lounger,” says Parsa.

“We started our design process with a focus on material—the goal was to create a durable, weatherproof collection that stands the test of time,” says Ben Parsa, CEO of CABA Design, who created the Chicory outdoor collection. “We instinctively knew the best outdoor timber product is teak and focused on capturing the elegance and uniqueness of the wood while also ensuring we didn’t use a one-size-fits-all approach.”

The resulting home is overflowing with greenery—and it's the perfect place for its owner, Patricio Martinez, and his girlfriend, Nati Malamute, to unwind.
