The top level includes a loft-like kitchen, dining area, and living room which opens up to the outdoor deck overlooking the gardens.

Inside, an open, wooden staircase connects the main living areas located on the lower level with the two bedrooms and baths perched above.

A highlight of the overhaul is the floor-to-ceiling glass on the north side, which includes a five-panel bifold door. The door opens to the couple’s favorite area of the house, the backyard. The deck is shaded by the cantilevered roof, and Ren planted drought-resistant brush amid the existing oak trees.

She also introduced new masonry features in primary colors and reoriented the home’s glazing toward the backyard rather than the street.

Ren von Hasseln studied architecture before founding Ren Ceramics, and she drew from both experiences as she transformed her midcentury ranch house in Ojai, California. Ren led the renovation of the property and crafted ceramic details found throughout the interior.

In the living room, set beyond the kitchen and dining area, floor-to-ceiling wooden shelving span across the rear wall, complementing the home's surrounding millwork.

Large windows wrap around the floor-apartment, enhancing the home's airy aesthetic.

The living area feels spacious and full of light despite its modest square footage thanks to its being double-height. A collection of old ship paintings and vintage ship netting help add to the nautical feel.

In the living area, a cedar storage unit made by Grant features a five-by-five-foot sliding panel that conceals shelving and the television. “It’s a way to make it feel less like a TV room during the day,” Beer says. The sunken sofa—a throwback to the residents’ childhoods in the 1970s— is from the Houdini collection by King Living. The dining chairs were a secondhand purchase.

The home’s exterior siding is made of a combination of blue-gray shiplap cedar and gray cement board.

They added a primary suite with a balcony on the second floor. “On a beautiful day, you can see the ocean,” Robert says.

An oak beam spans the room, and a custom fireplace was created by Noor El-Mohandes.
