Thanks to the Case Study homes being so meticulously documented, the current owner was able to refurbish much of the property to it's original specifications and finishes.

The meticulously maintained Bel Air home is a midcentury time capsule that still stands true to the architect’s vision.

Before: Architect Bernard Rasch designed this modernist rowhouse, one of six, in 1977. Richard and Nicole Kuchinsky bought this one in 2018, with the goal of remodeling it for their family while keeping the distinct features, like the wall of smoked glass in the entry.

The architects maintained the midcentury post-and-beam construction and Japanese-inspired details of the original building, while brightening and expanding the interior living spaces. Fields of native grasses connect the main residence, situated at the top of the slope, to the new structures scattered below. A pergola extends from the post-and-beam structure that was maintained during the remodel of the midcentury home.

The ceramics studio was formerly a pergola wrapped in chicken wire, used as a dog kennel by the previous owner. Inside the new structure, a vintage Danish chair, found on eBay, provides a modern perch. The windows’ deep mullions double as display shelves.

A tub zone lined in redwood connects to the master bedroom, which is furnished with a vintage Sergio Rodrigues lounge chair and Voyage Immobile seats from Roche Bobois.

Fung + Blatt designed the master bathroom vanity, which features Agape washbasins and fixtures and an angled mirror that reflects the oak trees seen through the skylights.

Delighted with the result, they requested additional structures, including a pool house with a dining area that opens to the outdoors. Rising from the edge of the pool deck, a planted overhang shelters a gym and sauna below.
