Oak cabinetry that was milled from the site is topped with Deer Isle granite. Locally manufactured tile from nearby Camden adds a textured sheen. And Muuto pendant lights hang over the bar.
Masa Arquitectos designed this minimalist house in Montevideo, Uruguay, for a young family on a tight budget who wanted to do most of the carpentry themselves.
All of the furnishings are by Uruguayan designers. The wooden console and iron-framed sofa are from Estudio Diario, the black metal chairs are from Estudio Claro, and the round dining table is from Samic.

In the backyard, a 1,056-gallon cistern stores rainwater for flushing toilets and watering plants—including a vegetable garden and plum, cherry, and fig trees. The home’s red zinc roof takes its color cue from neighboring buildings.
London’s renowned public transport system had left an impression on the pair; they didn’t want to shut the door on their formerly car-free lifestyle. Their new neighborhood allows them to walk or bike everywhere, including the university, their daughter’s school, and downtown Halifax.
In the powder room, aqua fixtures by Rubinet complement a peach concrete sink by Mudd.
The primary en suite has white tiles by Olympia and an E27 pendant light by Muuto.
A yellow volume in the middle of the primary bedroom contains the en suite bathroom.
The dining table is a vintage worktop bench from England with a custom glass top by Pars Glass.
In their architectural practice as in their home, Sara and Michael are interested in volumetric play and creating spaces within spaces. The idea shows up in their new kitchen, where a plywood volume with custom millworker pulls away from the walls—like an object within the gabled space.
The main cottage can be accessed from two points in the extension: the entry hall and the ground-floor bedroom. This ensures it remains connected but can operate independently depending on the needs of the residents at any given time.
The kitchen allows the extension to function completely separately from the main cottage, and can be separated from the boot room and utility rooms at the private entrance via a sliding timber partition.
The railings in the casitas echo the details of the main house. The stair treads are painted the same dusty blue as the loft floor. These tiny bunkhouses are designed to sleep a family of four, and also house a little kitchenette and bathroom.
The breezeway acts as a big communal dining space, while the round table for six in the kitchen is for more casual family meals.

The wooden structure surrounds the kitchen and connects it to the entrance, and the pantry and laundry room. This was a way of incorporating enough storage space, while keeping the rooms as clean as possible.
The daylit kitchen/dining space nourishes an array of plants. Audi and Ivy used solid white oak to craft a prototype of their firm’s Zygo sideboard, which holds their place mats and orchid supplies. The Amagansett kitchen island is by Siosi, and the farm sink is vintage.
