The wooden structure surrounds the kitchen and connects it to the entrance, and the pantry and laundry room. This was a way of incorporating enough storage space, while keeping the rooms as clean as possible.

CESI Full Body tiles in Ossido cover the walls while a checkered pattern of Agata and Sodio tiles defines the floor.

To meet the project’s sustainability goals and minimize impact to the site, the prefab was built off-site, has an impermanent foundation, smart-home controls, and a 4.1 kW solar array.

The system’s modules have a set design, but floor plans and finishes can be customized.

The courtyard and pool are adjacent to the entry stair and half a level above the street, so that no excavation was required. This brings the courtyard closer to the upper level living areas, while still allowing the guest suite on the lower level to feel connected to the courtyard.

Light pours through clerestory windows in the master bathroom. Staying true to the home’s overall aesthetic, Sweet used simple, contrasting materials—white oak for the cabinets and Ann Sacks white tiles for the walls.

The office on the second level is outfitted with a built-in desk and bookcase that spans the length of the walls.

Luxury appliance brand Dacor has explored the question of kitchen design through a concept kitchen that illustrates the principles that underpin successful contemporary design. “The inspiration for this space originated with the desire to create an open concept design with an overall natural feel,” explains Maddalena Nicolosi, Senior Kitchen Design & Innovation Manager at Dacor. The Dacor dishwasher seamlessly disappears into the walnut joinery, maintaining a unified look while still providing a powerhouse in features and performance.

At night, the building glows like a lantern, making the two studios visible.

The couple often collect materials from warehouses and country yard sales. The exterior cladding is made from old Oregon timber beams from a warehouse in Sydney, while the joinery is crafted from Cypress timber from wind damaged trees that Chris purchased. “It’s about creating refined pieces from found materials,” explains architect-owner Chris Stanley.

Knight combined Hardie board and wood siding on the exterior of the duplex, which features the ADU at left and a single-family unit at right, unifying them with Benjamin Moore's Burnt Sienna.
