Surrounded by tall pines on a secluded Palos Verdes site, the Buff, Straub, & Hensman home is in almost entirely original condition.

Set on a steep, forested hillside, Saul Zaik’s 1961 residence evokes a tree house with two wings connected by a series of cantilevered decks and a glass pavilion.

The couple completed their restoration in 2022. They repointed the original brick, which was in good shape.

In 2020, Isabel and David Yahng bought their Portland house, which was originally designed by architect Saul Zaik in 1963.

The courtyard divides the "bi-nuclear" house into adult areas and children's areas, including a playroom.

Boy Boy fabricated the framing for the flue shroud and base, which was then finished with plaster, and given a limestone benchtop. The Arto Ceramic tile extends into the kitchen, which has a preserved wood ceiling with new skylights.

Designed by Prinz and Brooks, the 6,400-square-foot Hayes-Bernstein Residence has only had two owners in nearly seven decades.
