While creating a live/work space at a former garage for Klari Reis and Michael Isard, architect Eric Dumican carved out an atrium on the second floor to bring in light. Three sides open with Fleetwood sliders; the fourth is a living wall by Planted Design using Florafelt Pro System.

Developed by Lang Architecture, Hudson Woods is an eco-friendly, locally-sourced, 26-family community spread across 131 acres in the midst of the Hudson River Valley. In the kitchen of one of the cabins, dark-green subway tiles contrast with wood cabinetry and a marble-topped central island that was crafted from blackened steel and walnut.

A full bathroom is adjacent to the master bedroom. The large space is accented by a wooden ceiling and large window that frame a view of the natural landscaping.

The kitchen features marble and zinc counters, a Waterworks faucet, and cabinetry from Jerry Short.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing allows guests to look from the kitchen island into the open living and dining area, and to the ocean views in the distance.

The wood of the kitchen cabinetry is detailed simply, with a minimalist touch and an accent of black, geometric hardware that is picked up in the black track lighting and furniture.

A wooden "curtain," designed by Mill and fabricated by John Hiser, divides the penthouse from the roof deck and redirects light. "I am obsessed with looking at these plywood forms at various times of day," says Mill, "from early morning at 5 a.m. to early evenings when the sun goes down. The light play is pure spatial poetry for me." A marble sculpture by Manuel Neri anchors the area.

The owl corner is a recent addition in the cave’s bedroom. A plywood perch below the viewing hole usually hosts a sculptural owl, while the light box installed to house drawings creates a calming tableau at night.

The open courtyard conceals and reveals the private parking garage for the home.

Now, glass and steel doors from A&S Window open onto a deck and significantly brighten the combined kitchen and dining room with natural light.

Soaring ceiling heights and dramatic glass walls bring the outdoors in.

The owners wanted the first floor of the home to flow seamlessly from the front to the back. They called upon a friend's business for their lighting to save on costs.
