In the first-floor bathroom, the mermaid backsplash Caleb carved plays off the Hygge & West “Mermaid” wallpaper.

Designed for extra seating and to complement the small window, the built-in bench has become the family’s go-to spot. The Artemide mini Anglepoise lamp (£400) sheds light on nighttime reading. Other lampshades, bought while traveling (to places including Bangkok), serve as cherished mementos.

Alex and Jean filled the living area with furniture from their previous homes. New double-glazed timber-sash windows and custom shutters—a £38,000 splurge—flood the space with light.

Kander created a casual and cozy vibe in the sunken lounge with built-in seating covered with simple foam cushions. Light pours in through the hidden skylight while the long, narrow windows add to the interior focus and intimacy of the room. The oversize moon print, one of few pieces of art in the house, celebrates the home’s Catalan name, Can Luna.

The living room’s leather chairs, coffee table, and black marble side table are from Joss and Main. The rug is from Thrifted, and the bull wall art was 3-D printed by Roger Daniel.

Scott and Regina’s toolkit of electronics extends outdoors. A Sonos sound system is installed on the patio and a retractable sunshade from DeFauw Design protects the kitchen cabinets’ gray Tabu veneer from fading.

After raising the rear patio to the level of the kitchen, the team reused the original redwood decking and supplemented it with recycled pieces from other projects. Recessed planters punctuate a garden wall. Scott and Regina warm themselves by a Solus fire pit on chilly evenings.

The open floor plan and vaulted ceilings maximize space and natural light throughout the home.

“We’re always throwing events,” says Paul, so the indoor/outdoor style was a great fit for them.

With its sprawling layout and unique design, the couple knew the renovation would be a challenge. But the couple felt that they had to take on the project and "not put our stamp on it, it’s a work of art,” says Paul.

“We found out soon after we visited the house that Liebhardt attended Taliesin West under Frank Lloyd Wright for two years,” explains Paul -- and it shows in the home's design.

Instead of creating a super modern house, the archways and materiality brought warmth and character.
