The front great room is intentionally public; the furniture-like wall (inspired by Mies’ Farnsworth house) creates privacy for all other rooms—even with no window coverings. No rooms have interior walls that connect with the outer perimeter of the house, echoing a design element of our 1958 E. Stewart Williams house in Palm Springs, CA.

The polished concrete floors add a sophisticated touch.

In this apartment, Kesha Franklin of Halden Interiors employs a palette of off-whites paired with a dark floor; moments of red in both the artwork and accent furniture enliven the space.

The home's large windows offer expansive views of downtown Los Angeles.

An open-plan living/dining/kitchen area takes full advantage of the ample light from multiple floor-to-ceiling windows.

Sunlight floods the rear of the house through large site-glazed windows. In the living area, the nine-foot ceiling has a grasscloth-covered raised inset.

The open-plan living space is bright, white, and airy.

White paint considerably brightens up the space, and now the living room overlooks the pool.

A Dellarobia Sectional offers comfy seating in the casual living room with a coffee table by Buka Design + Hardwoods.

Blue, yellow, and pink accents enliven the living area, where guests relax on the *Gus Modern sectional sofa.

Design-build firm StudioMET helped Sunil and Shelly Patel create a multigenerational home in Houston. The brick wall in the living area is accented with bricks salvaged from the original house on the site. The lounge chairs, sectional, and ottoman/ table are from Article. In the dining area, a pendant from Avenue Lighting hangs above a custom copper table. The draperies are from The Shade Store.

At a 1954 midcentury home in the West hills of Portland, Penny Black Interiors deftly updated the residence with standout cabinetry, carefully-selected tile, and wallpaper galore. The renovation balanced preserving the home's innate character and updating its function for modern life.

Exposed wooden beams cap the living room, which also features banks of oversized windows that open the space to Griffith Park.

The neglected state of the home required nearly ever space to be updated for both structural and functional reasons. "This house can be considered a brand new home with Herbert Burns' bones," says Thomas. "Every single surface has been touched, from all new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, windows, roof, poured terrazzo floors, the landscape—you name it, we touched it."

In this sprawling ranch, every guest will have an individual experience. Each of the three bedrooms have been decorated with period furnishings and have a different theme. For a communal experience, cook together in the modern kitchen with quality appliances.
