For this Eichler remodel, the objective was to respect the original bones with more thoughtful updates than what had come before. "Our goal was to design a beautiful mix of finishes that respected the timeless design intention of Eichler homes," say Sommer and Costello. "Rather than focus purely on historical renovation, we wanted to update the finishes and layout to ensure it lives on for the next generation."

The front façade received fresh white paint and new landscaping. The blue door was painted "Flaming Torch" from Behr, a vibrant orange.

The living room pairs neutrals with pops of color—and plenty of pillows and plants.

Architect George Bradley and his husband, Eddie Baba, renovated a 1941 house in San Francisco. Tiles from Heath Ceramics surround the Ortal Clear 130LS fireplace. The white ceramic logs are by Klein Reid (but of course can be replaced with real firewood!), and the firewood storage continues the same dark horizontal band that contrasts with the light-colored fireplace cladding.

A Cold Picnic rug and Coil + Drift mirror warm up a restored fireplace relocated from the basement.

Hatchet Design Build fabricated missing components to complete the casework around a bay window.

Martin and Katz plastered over the stucco finish of the fireplace wall with soft gray Venetian plaster.
