The coffee table is from Baxter & Liebchen and the custom felt rug is by Karkula; built-in daybeds by woodworker Rick Bradbury feature cushions by Chelsea Workroom upholstered in vintage Maharam fabric and leather.

“It’s the essence of midcentury design to take an economical approach to making something like the open-truss ceiling striking and beautiful,” says designer Brett Halsey.

In the family room, a vintage Victor Wilkins coffee table joins a sofa from Article and a rug purchased in Delhi by homeowner Reshma Shamasunder’s parents. Reshma is pictured here with her daughter.

The living area includes a sofa from Helmut Muebles and a coffee table by La Base, set against a lush backdrop of oleander.

Amir and Chi replaced the hearth's broken tiles and stuccoed the sides of the open fireplace, which Lord had originally detailed with a gravel mosaic.

New sliders by Fleetwood open wide to the pool deck, which was redone to match what had been there originally.

Classic modern pieces by Eames—a lounger, a molded plywood chair—subtly elevate the living room.

Openings in the ceiling allow sunlight to wash over the black slate floors and fir columns. A velvet-upholstered Mr. Chair by George Mulhauser adds color to the living room.

The half-wall that divides the living room and dining room is walnut, and was a clever way to separate the living and dining zones, and wrap the structural posts, which were painted a dark grey. There’s a television lift inside the cabinet that allows the TV to be stowed when not in use. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the flooring throughout is white oak.

The fireplace is covered in Norman brick from Mutual Materials, in an era-appropriate stacked pattern.

The inoperable picture windows were replaced with large sliding glass doors that open to the new seating patio.

Now, there are sightlines from the entry to the backyard. The dining table, surrounded by Wegner Wishbone chairs, is by Campagna, a Portland-based design studio.

A midcentury-style walnut screen separates the entry from the living room, yet allows connection with its permeability.

The living room is outfitted with furniture from a nearby Herman Miller outlet store, while the hanging rug was acquired by Jill's great grandmother while volunteering at a Native American reservation in Arizona.
