Handcrafted furniture awaits in nearly every room, while reclaimed maple and oak hardwoods line the living areas throughout the main level.

An Englander wood-burning stove warms the living room, and the two round windows were inspired by architect Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti, which the couple visited on a cross-country van trip.

Remo Kommnick and Emi Moore wanted a minimalist home that could blend with its site in rural Virginia. “We had to keep things really simple,” says architect Patrick Farley. The cabin is clad in stained western red cedar, and its form is inspired by shelters on the nearby Appalachian Trail.

The 1930s farmhouse was originally comprised of small rooms clustered around a central hearth. Taking down interior walls, compartmentalized rooms were traded for an open plan, better organizing the space for social gatherings.

Shelves flank the hall entry, with a powder room on the left and storage on the right. Sightlines allow for views to the backyard from the living room.

The vintage Parker Knoll armchairs were re-upholstered after the renovation.

An energy-efficient, Danish wood-burning stove by Rais anchors one corner of the living room.

Deadwood

Artwork by Adam Feibelman, a friend of the owners, adorns one wall, joined by the Roger Stool from Sika-Design, through the Danish Design Store. The coffee table was made from a stone remnant from the kitchen.

The red rock of the fireplace façade became smooth drywall with an elongated concrete hearth. “We fireproofed it with a layer of fireproofing between the actual fire insert and the outside walls,” notes Mattingly of the application. The rug is the Savannah from Armadillo, topped with a Cierre Aida Sectional from KCC, and a Little Petra Lounge Chair by &Tradition. The lighting is Noguchi, and casts a soft glow at night.
