A Knitted Dropped pendant light by Ariel Zuckerman hangs in the corner of the living room. The side chair is from Croft House, the custom couch is by West Coast Modern, and the rug is from Nordic Knots.

The living area features original travertine floors, stairs, and built-in benches. A woven coconut rug adds warmth. “People think from the outside that the inside will also be cold and aggressive, but it’s actually quite warm,” says Fabian.

The removal of the money wall opened the kitchen up to the living room below, allowing more natural light into the space. The bookshelves below, where the family's hedgehog lives, and the shelving behind the sofa, are new additions.

Capped with an original wooden ceiling, the dining area is another space offering direct outdoor access.

The facilities are designed to function off-grid with features like solar power operations and micro-flush toilets.

Houses in The Village feature Marvin windows and doors, energy-efficient GE and Frigidaire appliances, Mitsubishi heat pumps, and Zehnder HRV systems. Each buyer was able to customize the interior finish package of their house from options that met the community’s sustainability guidelines. One area in which residents’ tastes differed was flooring; the Davis family chose cork. In place of closets, the houses have built-in storage made of Douglas fir plywood.

Original details can be found throughout, including the red brick fireplace in the living room.

The redesign enlarged an existing arched opening between the dining room (with its vintage Saarinen table) and the new addition.

Large glass doors extend the living room to the adjacent terrace overlooking the city below.

The original windows were replaced with new ones that would let in more light and views of the outdoors. Stuart kept the archway leading to the kitchen, and restored the wood-burning fireplace.

We designed the kitchen to be able to see straight into our living space, making it easy to watch the kids while preparing meals,” says Leah of the newly opened up living area.

Shelves flank the hall entry, with a powder room on the left and storage on the right. Sightlines allow for views to the backyard from the living room.

Behind the glass facade is the couple’s workshop. The bicycles are prototypes they designed and use as their primary means of transportation. Called Metro-Pedals, they’re built of lightweight aircraft steel and feature interchangeable cargo accessories, low maintenance internal gears, and hydraulic brakes. “They’re the ultimate utility vehicle for the modern metropolis,” says Chris.
