Within the walls of this updated 1920s Spanish Colonial home is a world-class art collection that includes the work of James Turrell and Jenny Holzer. The abode was meant to contrast with the creative couple’s main residence in San Francisco—a Victorian on a steep hill. The Los Angeles getaway, designed by Síol Studios, was renovated to embody indoor/outdoor living while maintaining the original charm with beautiful bones and arched windows. The placement of the art was an organic process—some were designed in place, while others were placed afterwards such as the Barry McGee surfboards in the dining room.

"LaCantina Doors extend the home’s living area into the landscape, which was a critical part of the design,” states principal designer John Maniscalco.

Black aluminum door frames stand out against the concrete structure and sandblasted marble floors.

Since the clients wanted to host large social gatherings, the architects designed an open-plan living room and dining area that expands seamlessly to the outdoors.

A geometric wood accent wall lies across from the main entry wall and runs alongside the stairs.

Large, movable glass walls further increase the connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces, blurring the boundary between the two.

The sculptural stairway is fitted with white oak floating treads, a steel stringer, and a glass guardrail.

The spaces are simple, and zones are articulated by level changes in the floor and ceilings.

The abundance of natural light drifting in from above is enhanced in the first-floor communal areas, where the architects integrated an 11-foot-long, floor-to-ceiling window wall along the full length of the house.
