Madrid-based studio Ábaton Arquitectura renovated a forgotten stable in the Spanish province of Cáceres.

A hearth by de Vogelsangh warms the live/work prefab.

“From the courtyard, you then enter the house proper, directly into the main living room,” Hutchison says. “From this room, you have a panoramic view looking out through the trees to the river, or back into the courtyard.” The wood-burning fireplace, from Majestic, is clad in steel panels. Eames Molded Plywood lounge chairs sit side-by-side in the living room.

A recess in the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry provides a small working space.

The exterior of Site Shack is covered in steel panels that are bolted to the framing. Look closely and you won’t see any visible fasteners, as Powers Construction’s welder was fastidious, creating a seamless shell with just steel and glass.

“It is a function of what we are building at a greater scale, and pretty good resemblance of who we are as a group of people,” says Powers.

Garden Wall Residence, living room

A volumetrically expansive double-height living area serves as a generously proportioned "garden room," capturing vast sky and landscape views.

A full-height wall of glass brings additional natural light into the open-plan living area. The step down creates a cozy divide in the space.

The ceiling features exposed wood beams which extend straight out to the eaves.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing makes for a bright and airy living space and overlooks the exterior terrace.

Living Room

Plywood was used for interior walls and ceilings, and fir wood for the floors.

The exterior’s dark cedar siding was extended into the stairwell to connect the indoors and outdoors.
