In the 141 Spring Street project, resident Josh Nissenboim prepares food in the kitchen. The countertop is Carrera marble, chosen because for its lightness and ability to wear in naturally. He and his wife, Helen, keep cooking staples within easy reach on simple shelving. By sticking with the most basic essentials, the shelves are open and spacious rather than overly stacked.

Custom Russian Birch Plywood cabinets in charcoal have quartz counters, with concrete detailing at one corner, and at the windowsill. The globe lights are from Dutton Brown. Fay kept the original ceiling-mounted stove hood extractor as a nod to the home’s past.

A beloved focal point is the Noguchi pendant, gifted to the couple from a close friend, the actor Heath Ledger, who arrived one morning after the couple had moved in with “an electrician, ladder, and a huge box,” they recall. “The contents were this Noguchi shade, which has swayed in the breeze for many years since, constantly reminding us not only of his astute taste for interiors but his confidence to show up to a friend's house unannounced and install a giant Japanese pendant light shade.”

Walnut has also added warmth and contrast to the bathroom vanities. While the Heath Classic Field ceramic tile in Modern Blue has been used sparingly throughout the home, it still adds color to the hall bath vanity backsplash and at the shampoo niches in both bathrooms.

The sloped roof has the added advantage of looking onto the surrounding trees. A large television is concealed behind the wooden panel adjacent to the fireplace. A sleeping loft, seen at right, became possible when the old laundry room was eliminated.

Downstairs, the color returns in the primary bathroom, where the designers took out carpeting and a glossy black toilet and put in a Zuma tub beneath an &Tradition Flowerpot pendant.
