After entering through a gate, the home's charred spruce siding presents a somber face.

Thanks to a robust solar panel array, the house is net-zero, with enough energy to charge the couple's electric car as well.

A wall covered in graphite-colored Ann Sacks tile runs from the kitchen out to the covered porch. Similarly, the sheetrock ceiling and the concrete flooring are extended from inside to outside—a cost-saving measure that provides visual continuity. The Hot Mesh outdoor dining chairs are by Blu Dot.

A limestone terrace beckons off the main living areas. The white outdoor chairs are from IKEA.

The second seating area features furniture from All Modern.

The concrete block patio is from Larkin Refractory Solutions.

The increased square footage and the outdoor patios are welcome additions to the home.

A Cor-Ten steel planter running along one side is filled with Carex Ice Dance. “The plantings are minimalist, yet rich in color and texture,” says landscape architect H. Keith Wagner. The wood planters on the top level were custom designed by Kelton Woodwork.

The large, east-facing terrace has a hanging fireplace and ample room for seating. The space has the same proportions as the adjacent living room to blend the inside with the outside.

A quiet garden moment on the patio. This time, the tree is real.

Original details, such as the ornate mantel in the ground-floor living room, mingle with thoughtful modern updates.
