The clients requested a tropical garden they could walk through. The gravel pathway helps add to the sense of a tropical jungle.

“I am obsessed with glassware. Whenever I go to antique stores, I always come home with suitcases full of glass. The pieces on the plate rail in the kitchen are Depression-era glass, and the green pieces are nuclear glass (a material now illegal due to its radioactive uranium content). They have an amazing iridescence, and it’s fun to drink wine from them. We threw a dinner party using the whole set and serving green food. It was really beautiful."

Once through the street-level entrance, the property's modern garage door comes into view. Stairs lead up to the kitchen.

The white walls of the master suite, located on the top floor of the house, reflect sunlight, allowing the room to be bathed in a natural glow. Integrated with the roof deck, a green roof provides a cooling effect for the upper floors and absorbs rainwater, preventing run-off.

The concrete ceilings and beams from the original garage were retained.

The living room connects to the deck. Full-height windows with butt-glass corners provide tree-filled views.

The master bedroom features its own private deck.

The old wooden ceiling beams in the dining room were purchased from a local Amish farmer and painted white. Warm timbers tie the home together.

Throughout Thornbury House, Olaver Architecture was deliberate about applying "minor alterations to simple forms," to make the so-called "box" addition feel more special. Starting at the entry, a timber-clad, curved corner creates flow.
