A skylight was added to bring in more light, and the existing ceilings painted Benjamin Moore ‘Black Tar’ for contrast. The island pendant is the Schoolhouse Ray 17” Pendant and the stools are the Artek Aalto High Chair K65.

Using natural materials is one way of bringing nature indoors. Oiled white ash floors and ceilings, along with Italian poplar and Lawson cypress joinery, are found throughout architect Andrew Simpson’s 538-square-foot home outside Wellington, New Zealand.

The building’s interior is still a work in progress, but the residents plan to incorporate as many natural wood elements and low-impact design details as possible as they furnish. The loft’s floor will eventually be finished with floating parquet.

With wraparound windows on two walls, the sun room offers a lush look into the surrounding bamboo.
