In their architectural practice as in their home, Sara and Michael are interested in volumetric play and creating spaces within spaces. The idea shows up in their new kitchen, where a plywood volume with custom millworker pulls away from the walls—like an object within the gabled space.

"The solid oak floor is like its own piece of horizontal furniture, blending perfectly with the natural feel, as the soft oak planks flow together throughout the entire apartment,” says Vibeke Jenssen.

The common areas are on the main floor, with one bedroom upstairs and another on the lower floor.

In the kitchen, a sliding glass door provides direct access to a large adjacent terrace.

The custom kitchen bench and dining table "felt like a splurge

The stainless-steel modules are from Mekal Brasil, and the owners liked the material for its industrial aesthetic and how it nods to professional kitchens. On this end, the green Vitória Régia quartzite is installed to look like a solid cube.

The Bestor Architecture team transformed the kitchen with a more open layout finished with a green zellige tile backsplash from Clé and a lavender laminate on the island. “It’s a color combination you don’t see every day,” admits Campbell. “But playing with jewel tones and a pastel and integrating a punchier, bright color at the banquette just felt right. We liked how they were in conversation with one another.”

The kitchen was enlarged to meet the family's love of cooking.

Now, tall storage cabinets surround a niche with Kappa tile from 41Zero42, this time in a brighter hue, combined with a plainsawn white oak frame and Rosso Verona marble counter.

The pen shelving keeps the kitchen light and bright, which was the goal of its design. The kitchen and bath fixtures cost about $26,000.

The countertop is 4030 Pebble by Caesarstone atop custom Ash cabinetry. The faucet is by Dornbracht.
