Tucked away at the end of a long, private driveway, the Nine-Square House appears as an inviting cube-like volume in the middle of a forest.

The kitchen's painted, high-density MDF cabinets are durable storage options. The backsplash is white porcelain tile with blue grout that matches the cabinet hardware.

When Eric and Emily first moved into the house, they found a kitchen that had undergone a partial renovation and divided into two separate sections. They opened it up and added the peninsula for more counter space topped with Silestone.

Nato Studio added new lights to the already remodeled kitchen, including TK pendants over the island and sconces from Triple Seven. “For the lighting selections, we were looking for very natural materials that have a timeless feel, like brass and milk glass, as opposed to bringing in something that looked too contemporary,” says Cuttle.

Set steps from the main living area, the kitchen comes with custom cabinetry, stainless-steel countertops and appliances, and a large central island that offers barstool seating.

The interior wall of the kitchen that contains the refrigerator and pantry happened to line up with a side window, so it stops short of extending the length of the space, creating an opening that visually and acoustically connects the kitchen and dining room.

Before & After: Ground Floor

The kitchen layout was reconfigured so that the focus is on the view—the wall of windows, which look out on the ocean, is now underscored by one long, uncluttered counter. There, the faucet is Delta and the dishwasher is Bosch. The range stayed in nearly the same spot, and the opposite wall has been thickened with storage and the refrigerator column. Both the refrigerator and range are by Bertazzoni.

Brick reclaimed from the house's front porch and back patio was repurposed in the kitchen, paired with simple pine floors.

Australian expats Carla and Paul Tucker tasked designer Dan Gayfer with expanding their Melbourne bungalow without adding any square footage. In the kitchen, a soft palette of wood, laminate, and tile created cohesion, impressive considering the clients didn’t see a single finish, color, or material in person prior to their homecoming. The kitchen cabinets were clad in Russian birch plywood, and the countertops were concrete.
