Philippe’s favorite spot in the renovated apartment is the kitchen nook, where a dark green table by Muuto and a built-in banquette upholstered in yellow fabric create a cozy spot for working, eating, and reading.

The counters are by Caesarstone and the backsplash tile is Fireclay. The appliances are from Fisher Paykel.

In this compact Barcelona apartment, the original brick wall remains, but a slim oak panel backsplash has been inserted.

Harty explains that budget was an issue, and so "the house is just big enough to suit the needs of the family without being too grand.

The pantry features black-stained timber doors that conceal appliances, keeping the kitchen surfaces clear.

The kitchen opens into the living/dining space. Sight lines continue from the wraparound deck and garden, through the kitchen to the dining table.

“My favorite aspect of the project would have to be the custom-built planter/light box suspended over the island bench,” says interior designer Kate Lucas. “The cascading plants bring a gorgeous green accent to the interiors. I also have a soft spot for the herringbone floor.” The custom planter box was built by local furniture maker and friend Lee Gratton of Gratton Design.

Terracotta tile flooring in the kitchen is juxtaposed with Douglas fir flooring in the dining area. A skylight facilitates the inflow of natural light for the spaces.

Oak cabinetry and reclaimed Corian counters provide rich textures in the sunlight-filled kitchen.

In the kitchen, mini orb pendants by Allied Maker illuminate the island. The kitchen stools are by KBH through Fair Design.

Clean curves provide a clear protective function for the kids while giving the apartment an aesthetic distinction and gentle flow.

The clients have a large collection of indoor plants, and 4 S Architecture designed a scheme with plenty of spots to display plants, from the deep windowsills to the semi-recessed extractor above the island that features an integrated shelf. “We had originally specified a fully flush extractor system, but they are very expensive,” says architect, Julia Hamson. “We went for one that is semi-recessed, so was cost effective but still has less visual impact than a dropped extractor.”
