Chris customized the main bathroom’s patterned Granada cement tiles. The sink is by Duravit.

Seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry, the refrigerator and dishwasher are from Sub-Zero. The counter-top induction burner and convection oven are from Breville.

A fully integrated kitchen suite of appliances from Gaggenau was one of the project’s biggest costs at $56,300.

The kitchen sits underneath a workloft accessible by a wooden ship's ladder. Callie's dad Trevor Hilpert fabricated the ladder and much of the loft casework in his San Juan Island woodshop.

A table that is a family heirloom anchors the end of the run. The linear overhead light can cast illumination up or down, so that prep can be done with precision, when needed, or the owners can create a soft, upward glow when watching TV nearby.

The architects designed new bookshelves for the couple's collection, as Fred shares recommendations on Instagram. The Elle armchair from Luisa Attab sits with the Forma table by Maximiliano Crovato. On the shelves, there's a Maija lamp by Santa & Cole.

The dropped ceiling is old-growth fir that was discovered under plaster during the demolition phase of the project, and was repurposed for interior finishes. The custom island prep table is by Vintage Mill Werks, with Hay stools.

The home earned a Santa Monica Conservancy Award for it's restoration.

After: Pink-toned terrazzo tile counters and a backsplash and olive green-painted cabinetry enlivens the kitchen, where the designers created open shelving using leftover plywood from the mezzanine ceiling panels.

The new kitchen is more colorful, with a long, thin island that's ergonomically better suited to preparing meels and bringing seating closer to the cooking.

Depending on how the curtain in the living space is configured, it can shade the windows, hide the desk, fully enclose the seating area, and more. “Fabric allows for more flexibility, so a curtain wall does things that a normal wall can’t do,” Kyle points out.
