Thanks to a 2000 renovation led by Hollingsworth's son, Russell, the home is twice the size of other Neoteric homes, offering 3,865 square feet of living space across two levels.

Sliding glass doors and clerestory windows allow the main living areas to be drenched with natural light. Black Venetian Plaster walls in the kitchen pop against the stark white ceilings.

The kitchen underwent the most dramatic change, being relocated to the back of the house adjacent to the living room. White Oak floors and casework and new Kolbe windows warm up the space. The pendant light is from Design Within Reach, and the bar stools are custom from Sean Woolsey.

A cozy, built-in desk area sits nestled at one corner of the chef's kitchen.

Clerestory windows stretch from the kitchen to the dining and living areas, infusing the open floor plan with natural light.

Now, a picture window frames the views into the garden, and a tall glass and steel door accesses the backyard.

The upper cabinets were removed and replaced with a wall of blue-green handmade tile, with a glaze that reflects the sunlight.

A skylight wraps the stove hood to allow light to bounce off the adjacent wall. “I rarely put a skylight in a room,” says Kaplan. “I always run them along a wall. And then I run the wall directly up into the skylight because I prefer reflected light versus the harsh glare of a skylight. The walls kind-of disappear into the light.”

An Ipe boardwalk lines the kitchen and continues into the backyard. Not only does that tie the inside and outside together, “that way I could have a soft surface that you could stand on while you're cooking,” says Kaplan. “Also, it leads your eyes straight out the back.”

Kaplan designated a walk-in pantry for storage, which is what makes it possible to remove the upper cabinets. Not only does the pantry save money spent on cabinetry, it’s nice to have everything on display and easy to find: “I don't want to open all these cabinets,” says Kaplan.

The refrigerator is to the side of the pantry and forms a niche with a wine fridge and appliance garage separate from the cook’s main work space.

An L-shaped island wrapped in Pietra Cardosa stone has a prep sink, more storage, and a seating counter, from which you can gaze into the backyard.

The bunk room features four extra-long bunk beds, allowing the home to sleep 10.

The husband requested a pass-through window in the kitchen for easy entertaining.

A table made by the husband’s father is joined by side chairs from TRNK and a Dash & Albert rug in the dining area.
