"By keeping the main color block in the showers, we tried to contain the chaos to a small and palatable space within the bathroom," Cooper says. "It's fun when you're in there, but you're not overwhelmed when using the bathroom for other purposes."

The kitchen had been remodeled in the 80s and had an unfortunate layout. JHL Design revised the layout using an open kitchen concept and adding an eat-in bar. The redesign also brought back some of the original windows from the front of the house that peeked into the kitchen and modernized it by hanging shelves over the window for convenience and architectural interest. Oregon White oak was used for the cabinet faces and the countertop is quartz.

SHED added oversized sliding glass doors which allow for indoor/outdoor living during the warmer months, while new wood cabinetry establishes a clean, minimalist aesthetic, and an oversized, marble-topped island with a table extension provides room to cook, eat, and entertain. Oversized sliding doors open to the expansive deck, while skylights fill the space with natural light—a necessity with Seattle's gray winter skies.

"It doesn’t feel like a garage because Ramiro cut away the boxiness, but we could still roll a car in here," says Jorge. The refrigerator is by Haier; the range is by KitchenAid.

In the kitchen, there is a hidden pantry, appliance storage shelves, and a food prep area. A slide-away glass backsplash reveals additional cooking gadgets behind.

The kitchen showcases seamless maple cabinetry and soapstone counters, elements that pair well to create a simple, cozy atmosphere.

A kitchen island made of large Travertino Santa Caterina porcelain slabs from Ariostea breaks up the timber palette. Also pictured are Hay Cornet stools and a Baxter-Hubble lighting fixture.

Custom cabinetry in the kitchen is built from white oak and topped with Caesarstone counters. The floors are engineered hardwood.

Concreteworks countertops, a Wolf range, Kallista sink, and Boffi faucet also fill the space.

Bright red laminate shelves hold the family’s coffee supplies in a delightful reveal.

Glass blocks allow soft light to enter the kitchen without distracting from the courtyard view.

Road-Haus features thoughtfully crafted details throughout, such as the leather pulls on the kitchen cabinetry.

An island topped with a Raw Concrete waterfall counter by Caesarstone ($1,535) provides a place for the kids to make snacks. The Delta faucet cost $380; the Moen soap dispenser was $44.

Custom walnut cabinetry designed by Michael Weidner at Radhaus Kabinett Co. are framed by a Cambria Brittanicca Warm backsplash and topped with Q Premium Natural Quartz and Calico white quartz countertops.

Pops of green lacquer-painted wood, gently spotlit to heighten their presence, are juxtaposed against walnut cabinetry and a poured-in-place terrazzo countertop.
