The couple added curved cabinetry and a window seat to form a breakfast nook, painted in Farrow & Ball Red Earth. The table is discontinued from Anthropologie, where Kara previously worked as a display coordinator, and the overhead light is the Lambert & Fils Waldorf Double.

The TV does not dominate the living room space. Instead, it is hidden behind a red glass screen and there is also a pull-down projector screen for family movie nights.

A Southern California kitchen features oak timber cabinetry and quartzite countertops.

No-fuss, sturdy materials, like Kahrs oak chevron floors that camouflage dirt and easy-care black metal siding, free up time for family. “The more durable the material, the less work to maintain it,” says Susie. Also in the kitchen is a quartz countertop by Daltile and faucet from Kohler. The windows are by Milgard.

"We both like to cook a lot, so we really need a kitchen that provides us that opportunity," Jeffrey says. There's ample room for food prep here between the 17-foot countertops (laid over cabinets made of Ikea bases and Reform drawers) plus a kitchen island sourced from Community Forklift.

"The kids love playing and singing and I have this principle that if things aren't visible or easy to get, you won't use them. For them to play, their toys need to be visible, or if we want to cook, the food has to be visible."

Inside, the original ceiling complements new Douglas fir slats. A teal sofa from Crate & Barrel picks up on a color in the stained-glass panels. The coffee table is from Salty Home.

“We think everybody should have color in their office space,” says Maciagowski. “It’s what keeps us happy and motivated. It’s good for morale. Sometimes you’ll have it in one conference room, but we’ve applied it everywhere.”

The hood vent here is tiled for a pop of added texture.

A semi-finished daylight basement is now an independent suite that can flex in use. Master Furniture Makers fabricated the custom-designed cabinetry, curved built-in seating, and wall treatment. Caesarstone ‘Fresh Concrete’ covers the kitchenette counters.

Boy Boy fabricated the framing for the flue shroud and base, which was then finished with plaster, and given a limestone benchtop. The Arto Ceramic tile extends into the kitchen, which has a preserved wood ceiling with new skylights.

The pendant in the kitchen is from Huup Iluminación. The kitchen’s Sticotti shelving system and are by the couple’s studio, La Base.

Kat’s workbench is made of a century-old wooden beam from a warehouse in Duluth, Minnesota.

Valspar ‘Black Evergreen’ covers the beams, doors, and trim. The perimeter counters are concrete, by Cement Elegance.
