In the kitchen, a glass backsplash is one of many connections to the outdoors. The Hee barstools are by Hay and the Highline pendant light is by Rakumba Lighting Australia.

The brass backsplash was a risky experiment carried off by Natalie, who started with unlacquered 4x8 foot sheets, then gave them patina by covering them in vinegar, ketchup, and salt, and leaving them out in the sun. The resulting pattern was aligned as carefully as possible, and the surface sealed. “We just had to essentially cut the topography into a way that felt really great,” says Natalie.

For the backsplash, the homeowner chose ceramic tiles in a honeycomb pattern by Portland-based Clayhaus to compliment the walnut-faced cabinetry.

One of Amber’s favorite features in in the house is the splash of color in the kitchen backsplash, via a tile called 'Unfading' green slate from Vermont Structural Slate Company.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living room honors the home's original design and heroes the existing stone wall.

The design team restored the cork floors. The island lights are Sven Middleboe for Nordisk and are original to the house. The counters are Ceppo Di Gre Marble and the door to the restored pantry is painted Tarrytown Green by Benjamin Moore, and given a porthole window with reeded glass.

The leafy, green area outside of São Paolo is known locally as “a garden neighborhood”: a beautiful respite from the city.

Terra e Tuma knocked out walls and opened things up to accommodate a 2021 style of living. “Back in the ‘40s, “you had lots of rooms, rooms for cooking, for eating lunch... now everyone likes to eat and cook all together,” explains architect Danilo Terra.

In the living room, a wooden sculpture by local artist Dan John Anderson sits in front of a Mags sectional from Hay.

Their dogs, Goya and Sonny, hang out on the steps next to the elevated dining area.

The living area features a Strato CB2 sectional that Melody owned before the couple moved in together. In the kitchen, pendants made by the pair hang over a concrete-topped island.

The existing kitchen was tiny, so Patricia converted it and a small bedroom into a library. She saved the original chimney, as well as the woodburning oven and hot plate, and relocated them to the new, larger kitchen. “Everything I repurposed had to have a function,” she explains.

The couple added curved cabinetry and a window seat to form a breakfast nook, painted in Farrow & Ball Red Earth. The table is discontinued from Anthropologie, where Kara previously worked as a display coordinator, and the overhead light is the Lambert & Fils Waldorf Double.

Studio Becker Xu streamlined the kitchen by building all of the appliances into the millwork. The budget-friendly countertops are a Formica solid surface.
