In Dwell on Design's Design for Humankind series of onstage conversations and educational sessions, designers will share how they address the needs of diverse populations. Designers from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and certified aging-in-place specialists Kerrie Kelly and Michael A. Thomas will hone in on creating interiors that optimize independent living.

Orrill, a culinary professional, used Ikea’s kitchen planning software to plot out cabinetry and appliance placement. Levy split the 30-foot-long space into a private back kitchen, with an oven and staging area, and a public cooking station with a white laminate countertop—a maneuver that means guests in the adjacent dining area never see the messy stuff.
The residents incorporated speed racks into the cabinets. Typically found in restaurants, the racks offer chefs intermediate storage. In this case, the couple places food behind the cabinet until it’s ready to serve. After the meal is over, they can stow dirty dishes out of sight instead of interrupting the party with cleanup. To ensure trays slide in and out without catching the cabinet, King used hinges that allow the door to rotate 270 degrees.
In Roanoke Park, a neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, architect Matthew Hufft designed a home for his family that drew on the surrounding traditional homes. In the kitchen, Bertoia barstools are tucked under a custom honed-granite two-level kitchen island by a local company, Carthage Stoneworks. Hufft’s team designed and built the larch cabinets. The appliances are by Thermador.
“The style of my kitchen is Italian contemporary, and it was important to me to have an open layout with a lot of light and warmth,” Colaneri says. “I love to entertain for family and friends, so having a low maintenance space with a large prep area was a priority. When selecting products, I looked for unique appliances that really stand out, and give the kitchen a very custom feel.”
In the kitchen, a Heath Ceramics backsplash is paired with Smith & Vallee walnut veneer cabients and a Caesarstone Blizzard countertop. A suite of stainless-steel Monogram appliances rounds out the space. Pictured are the French Door Refrigerator, an Advantium Oven and Electronic Convection Single Wall Oven, and an Induction Cooktop with a Glass Canopy Hood.
