The custom millwork, fabricated by Loubier Design, was meant to celebrate the movement of the natural grain.

The renovated kitchen is defined by its custom oak cabinetry, as well as absolute-black granite countertops and a Heath Tile (the M144 in "oat") ceramic backsplash.

Beside the coffee bar in the kitchen, a work by Mike Saijo is displayed above a custom leather-upholstered banquette. The team chose soapstone for the island and the counter.

"We couldn't put installation where we wanted to expose the joists, so we had to put it on the roof. That actually helped with waterproofing—the original roof was likely our biggest challenge,

An Aria table from Room and Board creates a spot to gather. The countertop is Barbados honed marble from Walker Zanger, and it surrounds an LG induction cooktop.

Wang and the owners were meticulous about the cabinetry. They hand-selected each piece of the oak veneer to line up perfectly across each front.

Discrete storage is designed into the bottom of the booth, while the seat is upholstered in vegan leather made from pineapple skin as both the owners are strict vegetarians.

On first impression, the grey kitchen cabinets might seem typical but what elevates them is the Terracotta Breccia Pernice marble countertop and backsplash they anchor, not to mention the mono-material island. “If you took that same kitchen and replaced the marble with a solid colored quartz you’d have an entirely different looking kitchen that would have significantly less visual impact,” Lyons says.

Adam Levy sits in the kitchen of his rented midtown apartment. Rodriguez furnished the apartment with a mixture of vintage pieces, like Adam’s dining chairs, with newer pieces, like the plant stand from West Elm.

Boyer relocated the laundry room and installed this cozy seating nook for the family in the old space. Occupants can interact with people in the kitchen, or appreciate the views into the front yard and mature trees.

The homeowners loved the idea of bringing in warmth with wood details, so the team added a feature wall of clear cedar to anchor the utilitarian space. Hammer and Hand beautifully wrapped the pantry door in the same cedar for a uniform look. “They're such great craftspeople,” says Boyer of the contractor.

New custom walnut cabinetry syncs with the rest of the built-ins throughout the home, to create a pleasing rhythm in the open plan. The backsplash is Heath Ceramics tile, and the counter is Pental Quartz. Open shelves at the rear overlook a cozy den, and allow sightlines out the new windows at the front of the home.
