In the kitchen, an elongated window breaks the custom walnut cabinetry by Contour Woodworks.

The tile backsplash matches the wall color, though it differs in texture, and the countertop is made from local granite. The light-colored wood screen set at the back of the darkly stained cabinetry mirrors the dark outside and light inside of the exterior facade.

A Japanese-style wet room is tiled floor-to-ceiling, and features a seat in the corner for a spa-shower experience.

Not every client-designer relationship would have thrived under such extreme circumstances, but Dovey credits Sarah and Ben’s attitude for the project’s success. “They were observant and thoughtful, and really took the time to ask all the right questions,” says Dovey. “In the end, it went so well just because of the great relationships.”

"Everyone who visits speaks of the warmth created by the timber lining boards and the interest of the raked ceiling in the kitchen,” says homeowner Sarah.

Because the primary bathroom receives little natural light, the designer employed Zellige shower tile that reflects light and offers texture.

White Marmoreal flooring with shades of green, gold, and orange and dark green-painted cabinetry accented with brass pulls add whimsy in the laundry area.

The designer dressed the breakfast nook with a custom table inspired by Eero Saarinen, a Louis Poulsen-designed pendant, geometric-patterned wallpaper by Pierre Frey, pale green Farrow & Ball wall paint, and a bench upholstered with vinyl from Kravet.

Green-painted custom cabinetry by Hub of the House Studio in the kitchen lends an elegant sensibility. The satin brass hardware was designed by Hub of the House Studio.

Hub of the House Studio remixes a Burbank dwelling’s dated kitchen and bathrooms with color, texture, and pitch-perfect storage.

Designer Bryan Boyer and lawyer Laura Lewis bought their townhouse in Lafayette Park in 2015, the same year the storied co-op joined the National Register of Historic Places. Their restoration included laying slate floor tiles the same size as the original linoleum squares, hanging modular Dieter Rams wall shelving, and adding appliances by Fisher & Paykel.

The fluted glass-and-wood peninsula adds to the available counter space and storage on the kitchen side, yet still allows the homeowner to interact with guests in the other rooms.

The insertion of a NanaWall opens the kitchen to the backyard and repositions the kitchen as the center of the home. The black chandelier above the kitchen island is Mobile #3 by Michael Anastassiades.

An integrated Fisher & Paykel CoolDrawer™ disappears into the cabinetry and provides five temperature settings for maximum flexibility: freezer, chill, fridge, pantry, and wine modes.

On the rear side of the kitchen, a secondary pantry space offers an additional preparation area, along with a built-in wall oven and wine refrigerator.

“We would normally integrate the fridge, but this French Door refrigerator looked so good we were happy to keep it exposed,” comments Josie Sommerville of Whiting Architects.

A brand new line of black appliances from Fisher & Paykel provides even more style choices.

The wood of the kitchen cabinetry is detailed simply, with a minimalist touch and an accent of black, geometric hardware that is picked up in the black track lighting and furniture.
