King Friend residence

The owners, a couple who split time between San Francisco and California wine country, found the existing entertaining space in their home to be too small to provide space for the large dinner parties they enjoyed hosting. They decided to add a new living room and entry way to provide a more friendly and engaging atmosphere.

The inspiration was for a modern farmhouse with the emphasis on modern. The project, which included a 780 sq ft addition; replacing the roof, windows and siding; adding a new Henrybuilt kitchen; and shoehorning an additional 1.5 bathrooms into the existing footprint, was finished right in time for the couple to move back in the weekend that the devastating Napa / Somona fires started in October 2017.

However, after a year of sleepless nights stressing over the most minute details to make their dream house the home of their dreams for years to come, the owners took the opportunity of a lifetime to move to London.

The parking pad is located below the house and the couple added new wood and gravel steps to replace an existing, and quite scary, wooden staircase.

It was important to the couple that the entry steps afford a view of the window wall, offering a glimpse of the inside. Before the remodel, visitors would often walk directly to sliding doors in the living room as the path to the entry door was indirect and poorly marked.

A last minute change was the use of Metal Sales corrugated metal in matte black for the entry and the window wall. A 4’ wide Western Windows pivot door adds a bit of excitement to the entry.

Opening up the house to the long-reaching view to Spring Mountain was a key factor in the choice of vaulted ceilings and the Western Windows window wall. Despite the large expanse of glass here and for the pocket sliding doors, no structural steel was required.

The couple chose Turkish marble to complement the gray walnut Henrybuilt cabinets. The Sub-Zero wine fridge in the bar is completed by a Dornbracht hot/cold dispenser that provides instant hot water or filtered tap water. A separate Miele dishwasher makes washing glasses a breeze.
