“When you live in a community, it’s really necessary to discuss different points of view—the different necessities and expectations—and to be free to participate or not,” says Paula.
In the Izquierdos’ living room, the slipcovered sofas were designed by Cristián based on specifications by his wife, Maida. The rug was made by a Chilean artisan whom the couple met on a trip, and the Anna XXL armchairs by Crassevig were a wedding gift.
Resident Coti Echeverría drops in on Macarena Ringeling and her son. “Talking or having coffee with your neighbors—that’s not usually how things work in Santiago,” says Coti. “Diego and I were a little bit scared of this new lifestyle, but now we thoroughly enjoy it.”
In the entry, a plush mat absorbs snow, sand, and mud. It was designed to be removable for cleaning or replacement.
Each volume—a workshop, one for the primary suite, another for the living space, and a screened porch—is 12 feet wide, a limitation set by the site and by what was possible to bring over by boat.
