The kitchen, which friends helped put together, pairs affordable Ikea cabinetry with birch countertops and glazed brick tile.

There’s more concealed storage in the bathroom, this time clad in wooden tile so it blends in with the wall treatment. The flooring is terrazzo tile.

A soft transition from the primary bedroom to the ensuite is framed by curved corners in the white oak built-in, creating a sense of flow and calm. Custom-milled pulls are seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry, adding a tactile, tailored finish to the warm woodwork.

Kitchen and Stairwell

Architect Nic Brunsdon renovated an original heritage cottage for a young family in the suburbs of Perth, Australia. The 3,229-square-foot home includes a sunken “garden room” with large sliding doors that connect the interior gathering space to a sunny green courtyard.

The open living and dining plan is flooded with natural light. The wicker PK22 lounge chairs are by Poul Kjaerholm for Fritz Hansen. The suspension lamp is by DePadova.

Kitchen and dining area: The homeowners wanted a simple and durable material palette.

Plan B carpenters built the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves as well as the cabinetry in the kitchen at the far end of the room.

Tile selections include Bedrosian “Makoto” 2x8 tile in Shoji White and Ceramica “Graph” Tile in GP022.

The room is painted Farrow & Ball ‘Stiffkey Blue’ and outfitted with a custom desk.

The office/library acts as a transition area that “slows the separation” between the main living spaces and the primary bedroom, says Sean.
