The foyer's Douglas fir-clad ceiling extends from the glass-walled foyer outward to form a covered entry.

In the living room, a Stûv fireplace sits near Lori’s favorite place to paint. “We made the southeast corner glass, because that’s where the best view is,” says BCJ principal Ray Calabro.

A cement wall feature in the primary bedroom contrasts the green trees that the bed faces.

The fireplace surround is clad in Concrete Collaborative tiles from their Strands x Half Moon Collection. The range of tiles by Natalie Meyers is inspired by the shift in seasons governed by the moon cycles, and it features four distinct colorways that pay tribute to nature.

The original owners made the shoji panels themselves, and John and Erik replaced the rice paper. “There’s something special about knowing the screens were made by hand,” Erik says.

Custom furniture sits atop an Ikea rug. The custom fluted glass door opens to the hallway running through the house.

To maximize function, the living room's Brazilian-made sectional can be transformed into two separate beds for guests.

To further improve the acoustics of the open floor plan, a walnut-slatted, acoustic felt-backed dropped panel with integrated LEDs hangs above the kitchen island.

Sleek black timber clads interior walls as well, giving the open kitchen and dining area a dramatic presence.

The multilevel property is nestled on a tree-lined street in the Oakland hills. The front yard is dotted with succulents and cacti.

Ana Smud’s studio is in downtown Buenos Aires, yet she also has a home office with built-in bookshelves and a long narrow desk.

The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.

The wall-mounted shelves are custom-designed by Stewart-Schafer.

There are easy lines of sight between the main floor and the upper level.
