Katz played with different window orientations to create moments of surprise and delight throughout the home. "Brick is an evocative material for many people in Johannesburg," he says, noting that it has the same color as the soil. All brickwork is cavity brickwork, providing further insulation for the home.

“While the house predominately enjoys a long vista down the valley, there’s a special viewpoint in the main bathroom, a slice of glazing at head height offering a peaceful perspective of the River Don and Cairngorms hills beyond,” says architect Kate Brown.

"The ceiling roses, clawfoot baths, and skirtings are ornate flourishes which recall the manors of a bygone era."
